08/30/2005: "Purging the Didges, and other woefully overdue tasks"
It's long past time to purge the conspicuous didgeridoo references around here; you'd think we were trapped in 1994. I haven't even touched a didge in years, yet it's mentioned prominently on the splash page-- not to mention that the two stale musical samples offered both feature the archaic drone of a didge!

The didge-purge will be attended to s... oops, almost used that S-Word again! *Ahem*...the didge-purge will be attended to within our lifetimes. (Hang in there: eat more vegetables, quit smoking and watch out for drunk drivers.)

Hey, how about a new flute picture? I rather like that lip-plate form with the two gentle points... a different photo of this same flute appeared a while back, along with a short sound sample (August 12th, below.) It's an F-Sharp Bass that's been around for a few weeks, and it's due to join the bamboo flute diaspora. Probably end up on E-bleeping-Bay in a few days if not otherwise spoken for. We've been avoiding eBay lately since it's such a pain to put those listings together and the bamboo-flute field has gotten crowded over there, but oh well...

Now how did I manage to spend four recent days in Vancouver BC without taking a single picture? A very uncharacteristic result, but then this was an unusual trip: we spent most of it being treated to a rather unaccustomed lifestyle, and I'm still burning off the food... Next: a Crater Lake National Park campout, this coming weekend! Haven't been there since I was ten years old, and how the time flies. My siblings were slightly nuts to schedule a Crater Lake trip on Labor Day Weekend, and I must remember to bring earplugs against the cacophony of RV generators and screaming brats at the "campground." Swamp Witch and I may slip off on the second day to a more quiet and relaxing hike-in camping spot, since there are extensive trails throughout the park where RVs fear to tread.

Crater Lake is the deepest in North America, and Oregon's only national park. And Washington has, what, three such parks: Olympic, North Cascades, and Rainier-- is that all? As for California, how many do they have? Must look that one up, but in any case Oregon got short shrift among West Coast states. Given the predatory intentions of the current administration's stooges, that may actually be an advantage... wouldn't want to attract any unnecessary attention from that bunch, since we don't really need a fast-food outlet and souvenir stand at every trailhead. Hey, might as well just pave over all those trails anyway; there are so many underprivileged asphalt lobbyists in this country.

Never fear -- we're not looking at camping at Crater, but have our sights set on two nearby bodies of water. I'll keep you posted.
